Lesson 3: The 16th Battalion’s significant events

Introduction

In this lesson, students will be provided with a list of events that are significant in the journey of the 16th Battalion and will be asked to research to find the date that they occurred and some more information about them. These events will then be used to create a timeline, or can be added to the location maps created in Lesson 2.

Broad learning outcomes

  • Students will use their research skills to locate and evaluate historical information.
  • Students will sort information in chronological order to create a historical timeline.

Resources

You will need:

  • computers with internet access
  • ‘16th Battalion significant events’ activity sheet
  • location maps from Lesson 2 (optional).

Lesson steps

Provide groups or pairs of students with a copy of the ‘16th Battalion significant events’ activity sheet. Students must use their research skills to find out the date that each of the events occurred, and additional information about it.

Please note: The events on the ‘16th Battalion significant events’ activity sheet were sourced from www.awm.gov.au/unit/U51456/. Therefore the dates and extra information can be found at this site. However, it is up to you if you provide your students with this URL, or ask them to research more broadly.

There are several ways to conduct this lesson:

  • Ask each group to research all of the events and create a group timeline.
  • Allocate a small number of events to each group and combine the researched information to create a class timeline.
  • Provide a single event to each group and combine the researched information to create a class timeline.
  • After research is finalised, the information about the events could be added to the journey map/s created in Lesson 2.
